National Dialogue on R2P and Transitional Justice in the Philippines

17 Nov 2023

In the past couple of months, the Philippines has been involved in two key events to support R2P.

National Dialogue in the Philippines

On the 30th of September 2023, the Philippines convened a national dialogue on R2P to take stock of the understanding of R2P and its progress in the country.

It sought to identify how state and civil society actors could invoke R2P in current initiatives to address atrocities in Myanmar, as well as what the Philippines should do to prevent atrocity crimes at home.

Workshop on R2P, Atrocity Prevention, and Transitional Justice

Following the national dialogue, on 7 October 2023, the Asia Pacific Centre for the Responsibility to Protect Office in the Philippines organised a hybrid workshop on R2P and atrocity prevention, to consider how the two could be linked to transitional justice.

The meeting brought together a total of 23 participants from government and civil society, as well as Indigenous peoples. During the workshop, participants outlined possibilities for future work, including scoping research on atrocity sites in the Phillippines, collecting women's narratives on transitional justice, and exploring women-led community memorialisation.
